De Ceuvel

Zoöp since: 2023 | Location: Amsterdam, NL | Speaker for the Living: Thijs de Zeeuw
De Ceuvel is a sustainable creative hub with a vibrant community of entrepreneurs and artists with a green heart. As a Zoöp, they work on a former shipyard to create a place where people and other forms of life share the space together, despite contaminated soil from the industrial past.

Highlights

Highlights of the goals De Ceuvel is working towards as a Zoöp:

  • Strengthening ecology and bringing life back to the site
De Ceuvel actively works to improve living conditions for animals and plants and to restore the contaminated soil. Wetland areas are protected from pollution, light pollution is reduced, and birds and small mammals are given more peace and space. Through phytoremediation (plants that gradually clean the soil), nature itself helps to restore contaminated ground. A landscape is slowly growing in which more and more species feel at home.

  • Community involvement (now and in the future)
De Ceuvel works to ensure that the Zoöp idea genuinely lives within the community. Through meetings and conversations, residents and users are brought along in what it means to take shared responsibility for the place. Thought is also given to how the site can continue to develop sustainably, even if it changes ownership in the future.

  • Strengthening the relationship between people and nature
Spaces and activities are being developed on the site that help people get to know the life at De Ceuvel better — including improved bird-watching spots, mini safaris, a field guide, and events where visitors of all ages can explore the area themselves, above and below water.
