Breda University of Applied Sciences
Zoöp since: 2025 | Location: Breda, NL | Speaker for the Living: Wouter Engelbart
Breda University of Applied Sciences works as a Zoöp towards a climate-positive campus where people and other life flourish together. They see the university as part of a larger web of life, and consider the impact on the living environment – inside and outside the campus – in every decision.
Highlights
Highlights of the goals BUas is working towards as a Zoöp:
- Strengthening biodiversity on campus
BUas is taking first steps to make the campus richer and more vibrant for a greater variety of species. They are building on the Community Garden and starting a small food forest zone on campus. Composting systems are being introduced, an ecological mowing schedule is being applied, and flowering plants are being added to attract more life. Students, staff and local residents actively participate through regular gardening sessions. - Increasing ecological connectedness
BUas is working to raise awareness of the relationship between people and nature on campus. Through research, nature experience sessions and activities around the Community Garden, the aim is to help students and staff feel more connected to their living environment and to the other life forms present there. - More sustainable food and procurement on campus
The university is critically reviewing its food and beverage procurement. Suppliers are encouraged to work in more local and regenerative ways, and new partnerships are being sought with producers who strengthen biodiversity. In this way, the campus's impact on the living environment is being made progressively more positive.
