Waag futurelab

Zoöp since: 2025 | Location: Amsterdam, NL | Speaker for the Living: Harpo 't Hart
Waag Futurelab works towards an open and fair digital and social future. Together with artists, designers and scientists, they develop alternatives to how technology is designed and used. In doing so, they look not only at the impact on people, but also on the living environment.

Highlights

Highlights of the goals Waag Futurelab is working towards as a Zoöp:

  • A more-than-human perspective in technology (Public Stack)
The Public Stack is a 'lens': a way of looking at technology. Waag Futurelab uses it to assess not only the technical side of digital systems, but also their social, ethical and ecological impact. So not just: does it work? but also: for whom does it work, and what does it mean for people and the living environment? Waag Futurelab wants everyone using or presenting the Public Stack to reflect on the impact of technology on the planet and the life connected to it.

  • Citizen sensing with attention to all life (Smart Citizens Lab)
In the Smart Citizens Lab, public research is being broadened to include more-than-human perspectives. Alongside citizens, other life forms are also incorporated into data collection, including through biosensors. This explores what technology means for the entire living environment, not just for people.

  • Regenerative working in the Open WetLab
The Open WetLab is being further developed from a regenerative perspective: learning from and working with living systems. The lab is becoming a place where technological and ecological processes are explored as mutual reinforcements.
